All dog training is not created equal. This may seem like an obvious point, but it can't be emphasized enough. All of us have known dog owners who have taken their dogs to obedience classes and have been disappointed with the results. Many times these owners will blame themselves for not doing their part, or not following through with what was taught at the class, but usually that's not the case. The reason the owner didn't follow through was probably because he or she wasn't seeing much improvement when they tried, so they just gave up.
The fact is there are several approaches to dog training and not all of them are going to produce the kind of results you want and deserve. Many dog training classes today are based solely on the premise of "totally positive reinforcement". In other words, no corrections for bad behavior or poor performance are ever allowed. While this approach is fun for the trainer and for the dog, it is also predictably unreliable.
For instance, if your dog got loose and was running toward the street with a car coming, would you want to rely on a treat to stop him? Fact is, even if you miraculously had one in hand in such an emergency, it isn't likely that it would have much effect.
That is why I believe that using only "totally positive reinforcement" methods is like trying to do a job without all the available tools. You'll get some results, but they will take much longer and won't be nearly as effective, especially in real world (highly distractive) situations.
